Cartilage is a smooth, elastic tissue that covers the ends of the bones in the joints and helps them glide over one another with ease. When the cartilage wears down, it can cause pain, swelling, stiffness and reduced mobility of the thumb. Thumb arthritis affects the joint between the base of the thumb and the wrist bones (carpometacarpal joint).<\/p><p>The most common type of thumb arthritis is <a href=\"https:\/\/leonidou.gr\/en\/osteoarthritida\/\">osteoarthritis<\/a>.<\/p><h2><strong>Thumb Arthritis \u2013 Causes<\/strong><\/h2><p>The exact cause of basal thumb arthritis is not known. However, there are certain risk factors that may contribute to the development of this condition. These risk factors include:<\/p><ul><li><p><strong>Age<\/strong>: Basal thumb arthritis is more common in people over the age of 50.<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Gender<\/strong>: Women are more likely to develop basal thumb arthritis than men.<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Overuse<\/strong>: Repetitive use of the thumb, such as in certain occupations (manual work or continuous computer use) or sports, may increase the risk of developing basal thumb arthritis.<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Trauma<\/strong>: A previous injury to the thumb, such as a fracture or dislocation, may lead to arthritis.<\/p><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-55df270 color-scheme-inherit text-left elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"55df270\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><strong>Thumb Arthritis \u2013 Symptoms<\/strong><\/h2><p>The symptoms of basal thumb arthritis can vary from person to person. Some people may experience mild symptoms, while others may experience more severe symptoms. The most common symptoms include:<\/p><ul><li><p><strong>Pain<\/strong>: Pain at the base of the thumb is the most common symptom. Further investigations such as plain X-rays or, in some cases, an MRI scan may be required to investigate other possible causes of the symptoms and to assess the severity of the damage. Some patients with thumb arthritis also develop symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, in which case further investigation with electromyography is required. Treatment is initially conservative and includes:<\/p><ul><li><p>Rest and immobilization: Resting the thumb and immobilizing it with a supportive splint helps reduce pain and inflammation. The splint is recommended for use during the night and intermittently during the day.<\/p><\/li><li><p>Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs<\/p><\/li><li><p>Corticosteroid injections: Corticosteroid injections directly into the thumb joint can help reduce pain and inflammation.<\/p><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2ee4466 color-scheme-inherit text-left elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2ee4466\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><strong>Thumb Arthritis \u2013 Surgical Treatment<\/strong><\/h2><p>When conservative treatment is not effective, surgical treatment is recommended.
