What Causes Knee Pain?
Knee pain is a common problem that can affect people of all ages. From athletes and older adults to people who lead a sedentary lifestyle, anyone can experience knee pain. By understanding the causes of knee pain, we can take appropriate measures to prevent and treat it. Below, orthopaedic surgeon Andreas Leonidou outlines all the possible causes of knee pain.
Injuries
Injuries are one of the most common causes of knee pain. These may include:
- Cruciate ligament tears: The ligaments of the knee, such as the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), can be injured during sporting activities.
- Meniscus tear: The meniscus is a flexible cartilage that acts as a shock absorber between the thighbone and the shinbone. Meniscus tears are common in sports that involve twisting and rotating the knee.
- Quadriceps tendon rupture: A complete quadriceps tendon rupture is a serious injury that requires immediate treatment with surgical repair.
2. Arthritis
Knee arthritis is another common cause of knee pain, with the two main forms being:
- Osteoarthritis: This form of arthritis is caused by cartilage wear and tear and is more common in older people.
- Rheumatoid arthritis: This is an autoimmune condition that can affect any joint in the body, including the knee.
3. Chondropathy
Chondropathy of the knee is a condition characterised by damage to the articular cartilage of the knee. When the cartilage wears down, it can cause pain, swelling, stiffness and reduced knee mobility. In the knee, it frequently affects the kneecap and is called patellar chondropathy. Chondropathy is one of the most common causes of knee pain.
4. Tendinitis and bursitis
Tendinitis is inflammation of the tendons, while bursitis is inflammation of the bursae, the small fluid-filled sacs that protect the joints. Both conditions can cause severe knee pain, especially during movement.
5. Patellofemoral pain syndrome
This syndrome, also known as “runner’s knee,” is caused by overuse of the knee and poor alignment of the kneecap. The result is pain around the kneecap, particularly when going up or down stairs.
6. Overuse
Overuse of the knee, whether from sporting activities or everyday movements, can lead to pain and inflammation. This includes conditions such as quadriceps or patellar tendinitis.
Solutions and treatments for knee pain
The management of knee pain depends on the cause and severity of the problem. Treatments may include:
- Rest and avoidance of activities that cause pain
- Application of ice to reduce inflammation
- Physiotherapy to strengthen the muscles around the knee
- Anti-inflammatory medication
- Surgery in severe cases, such as ligament or meniscus tears
